Fallout 4 Raider Replay - The Back Story

Fallout 4 - Lone Survivor

I named this fellow Dutch after another morally complex video game villain. He's average in everything but combat and infiltration skills. He relies on persuasion when the situation warrants. He prefers lethal  sniping to in person combat.

Ex military, he had been managing PTSD with medication and a solid family relationship. He woke up in a hellscape and was tormented by memories of his wife's murder and his son's kidnapping. He soon developed a chem addiction. He desperately wanted to find his son but this was complicated by distrust and increasing paranoia.

His best friend is a dog he found at a service station and he maintains his true Commonwealth base there. He did do some odd jobs around Diamond City but some of those went bad and he decided to strike out and look for information on his own. The Commonwealth is a very dangerous place and he partnered with Cait until she got too close. He is much more comfortable with robots and synths. Jackass comments cover his discomfort with other humans.

He is not completely despicable and I think he would have been very attracted to the Brotherhood of Steel if he had encountered the Prydwen before he met the Nuka World raiders. He quickly decided that becoming an over boss was his best chance for survival. Every where he looked raiders and gunners seemed to be doing better than the scattered settlements and enclosed enclaves. That is until they crossed him.

He didn't really trust Porter Gage but Gage was very open about his motivations and they did become friends of sorts. Dutch was nearly not ruthless enough for Gage. Dutch should have been opposed to slavery but he rationalized that the traders and settlers were much safer under his rule. Never mind that was the only way he could keep control over his raider allies.

Once established as raider force in the Commonwealth, he returned to seeking answers about his family. He connected with Nick Valentine the Diamond City synth detective he had been referred to. Dutch thought Nick was better than most humans and tried to hide his own dark side. All roads led to the Institute and Dutch was forced to ally with the Railroad to get inside.

The shock of finding his son so aged soon turned into complete admiration. A massive, meticulous and advanced deep underground bunker was very appealing to a paranoid. On top of that his boy was running things. Whatever Dutch thought of the Institute's unethical experiments it wasn't much of a leap for a Commonwealth criminal to ally wholeheartedly with his calculating son. There were some downsides to this. He did not enjoy betraying the Railroad but he simply couldn't protect them. Learning of his son's terminal illness was devastating. He had no connection to the Brotherhood other than a brief alliance with Pallidan Danse in exchange for information. The Brotherhood were clearly a threat and had to go but this action added to his already numerous enemies.

He gained several safe above ground refuges during his exploits and the Commonwealth is pretty much his oyster now. Whenever regrets start creeping in he pops a chem or downs a whiskey.
